The Zvezda cinema was, for a long time, a very popular Belgrade cinema until in 2007 a botched privatisation landed it in the hands of a local ‘businessman’ who had no intention of running it as a cinema and whose widely reported intention was simply to cash in on the cinema’s prestigious location.
In 2014 the cinema was peacefully occupied by a group calling themselves the Movement for the Occupation of Cinemas (Pokret za okupaciju bioskopa) who cleaned up the theatre and started showing films for free.
A picture of the upcoming showings (with titles in English, where appropriate) can usually be found on the group’s facebook page.
