Belgrade’s New Year celebrations are already very much under way with concerts in several locations around town.
Last night saw thousands of fans and pop music-lovers turn out for concerts by Serbian ballad maestro Željko Joksimović and pop-rock band Van Gog.
Tonight’s round of live gigs will include Yugo-nostalgia sensation Lepa Brena, Serbian pop act Tropiko Bend and – believe it or not – Hollywood actor, martial artist and musician, Steven Seagal. It is reported that Seagal will be playing a solo set, without his band Thunderbox, with songs mostly from his second album (yes indeed, he has more than one album) that are an eclectic blend of pop, rock, world music, country and blues.
The much touted and ever-so-slightly controversial Balkan turbo-folk and pop mega-star, Ceca (Svetlana Ražnatović), will not take part in the New Year’s Eve celebrations and will, instead, play a concert on the 1st of January – the famouse repriza (lit. “reprise”… the party after New Year’s Eve when Belgraders apply the hair-of-the-dog remedy to their January 1st hangovers).
Don’t forget to get up (relatively) early on the 1st of January to check out the 2016 Street of the Open Heart. Don’t worry, it has nothing to do with surgery – it’s a charity event mostly for kids but one adults can enjoy if they escape to a good kafana.
