What I Discovered This Week...Vol. 37

1. Serbs don't know what Applebee's is

And you might not either unless you're from the USofA.

I watched The Dictator the other night at Usce. Yes, it was funny. I actually haven't seen any of his previous films, so I don't have a benchmark for comparison, but I enjoyed this one. There were a couple of parts that were just wrong, thought. Not politically incorrect wrong, just kinda gross wrong.

So there's this line in the movie that suggests that an American man who gives up on life wears Crocs and goes to Applebee's everyday. I laughed out loud at this line but the rest of the theater...crickets. Guess they have never experienced Applebee's, one of THE worst chain restaurants in America, strategically positioned in almost every suburb.

2. Belgrade is a 5th date kind of gal

I was chatting with a friend of mine who currently lives here but is from...let's just say somewhere in North America. She was sharing that a friend of hers wants to come for a visit and my friend was trying to convince her friend to meet up in another European city and then maybe just spend a day or two in Belgrade. But my friend's friend was insisting on just coming straight to Belgrade.

My friend explained her hesitation...she thinks that you can't really fall in love with Belgrade at first sight as you might with other European cities. But rather, Belgrade requires that you get to know her a little better, spend some quality time with her, get to know her heart. My kinda gal ;-)

3. Comunale rocks my world!

I'm sure I've mentioned before how much I love the outdoor terraces at Iguana and Comunale. In fact, Iguana made it into last week's discoveries. But I haven't been giving Comunale its rightful praise. The last time I actually had a meal there was months ago and I was never really that impressed with the food, but apparently I was ordering wrong.

A friend of mine dines at Comunale all the time and raves about it so last night I decided to experience it her way. Her way included: the Antipasto Comunale to start and then we split the Buccatini Amatriciana and the Comunale Pizza (there were four of us, by the way).

Everything was delicious!! And I loved the fact that we were able to sit there for 3 hours and could've stayed even longer if we wanted to. They don't rush you AT ALL. Which could be frustrating if you ARE in a hurry, but thankfully, in our case, we weren't. We were there from about 6:00-9:00 and it was absolutely perfect to sit outside at this time...not too hot, not too chilly. It was so relaxing and lovely!

Oh yes, and because Comunale and Iguana are owned by the same people, you can order Iguana's desserts at Comunale. I mentioned last week how much I love Iguana's Chocolate Souffle, but last night we ordered the Sticky Date Pudding, which comes in at a close second. YUM!

4. 4Kings Party at Lava Bar tomorrow night

We will be heating it up at Lava Bar tomorrow night starting at 10:00pm. If you missed the last 4Kings party, I'm sorry to hear that because it was incredible! You can check it out here:

Wishing you all a fantabulous weekend and sending you lots of love!!

I disagree. I instantly fell in love with Belgrade. It took me about a day. My friends, and about 10 different couchsurfers, who I had stay with me during a period of two months - all loved it from the second they stepped in here. Honestly, I don\'t know how anyone can spend two days in Belgrade and not fall in love with it instantly!

Travel and you ll know ! Belgrade has some charm, but to shout out loud that we shall all fall in love sounds narrow minded nationalist comment ! Sorry ! I don t disagree or agree, as a democrat I share my point of view and respect others opinions and taste without imposing them mine !

I have traveled, and I do know. And how is it narrow-minded? I\'m passionate about Belgrade and my country. If someone didn\'t love Belgrade, I\'d obviously understand, I wouldn\'t rage and force my opinions on them.

I instantly feel in love with Belgrade as well, but maybe it was due to the people that I knew who were living in it besides the city itself. However, since this was all so new to me, I might have had the same reaction no matter what city I began my Serbian adventure in...but then again maybe not...as even though I have now been to a few others that I feel are friendly and quaint, they don\'t have the vibrancy (? not sure that is the right word, but that is all that comes up right now) of my beloved BG. Just my 2 cents worth. PS And about Applebee\'s...I am with you in thinking that only Americans would get that allusion and chuckle, but then I looked them up, and they are world-wide with the most in Mexico, South America and the Middle East...amazing. And maybe Serbia should be next as there are none in \"these parts\". Hihihihi

Thanks for your comments! Of course, it\'s all a matter of perspective and personal taste...some people will fall in love with BG right away, others will grow to love it and still others will never love it. I just thought my friend\'s comment was cute and interesting way of looking at it. I, too, fell in love with it right away but I am Serbian and I have family here.

Thumbs up, Kat... as I was beginning to think you were one of the cautious ones. But you are right that it is a matter of perspective, and I think also, what one \"brings to BG\", if that makes sense, for I tell my students that books are what they bring to them...so if they bring boredom, that is what the book will be more than likely. (and I have a confession here. When I first read that part of your blog, I read it too quickly and thought it that you asked if anyone could fall in love at first sight IN Belgrade... and I was thinking... YES and in LUST, too as that has happened to me as well. :-O)

I agree, Linda, it\'s absolutely what you \"Bring to it\"....that\'s true for anything in life :-)

I fell in love with BG one night when I first arrived. Can\'t get enough of this place!
